JLPT strategy changes by level

Up to N3, vocabulary and grammar volume decide your score; from N2, reading speed and listening are the battleground. Self-study makes it hard to see your weak question types objectively, and listening rarely improves without feedback. Tutors with JLPT experience read your mock-test results and set priorities for the time you have left.

The JLPT has no speaking section, which is why so many high-level passers can't hold a conversation. A 1:1 tutor lets you pair test prep with speaking practice — so the Japanese outlasts the exam. See the study guides below for level-by-level plans.

Frequently asked questions

From which level is a tutor worth it?

The biggest gains are at N2–N1 (reading speed, listening, weak-point diagnosis). For N5–N4, self-study plus one weekly check-in lesson is often enough.

My listening is weak — what helps?

The lesson itself is live listening practice. Many tutors add dictation and shadowing homework — ask for a listening-focused plan in your first lesson.

How much do lessons cost?

Tutors set their own rates — the range at the top of this page shows current actual prices.
