JLPT strategy changes by level
Up to N3, vocabulary and grammar volume decide your score; from N2, reading speed and listening are the battleground. Self-study makes it hard to see your weak question types objectively, and listening rarely improves without feedback. Tutors with JLPT experience read your mock-test results and set priorities for the time you have left.

JLPT levels from N5 to N1: what each one means

For work or study in Japan, N2 is the practical starting line and N1 widens your options considerably. Tell your tutor your current and target levels in the first lesson, and priorities across vocabulary, reading, and listening can be set against the time you actually have.
What N1 tutoring actually involves
N1 is hard to brute-force with more study hours. The vocabulary reaches into literary forms nobody speaks, the reading is abstract editorial prose under time pressure, and the listening never repeats itself. That's why N1 tutoring is less about covering material and more about diagnosis.
- Read your mock-test misses for patterns and set priorities for the time left — full-syllabus review is the most common way N1 candidates waste months.
- Reading practice means unlearning read-everything-first — with a tutor you retrain where to look first for each question type.
- Listening drills (dictation, shadowing) become homework, while the lesson itself runs at natural speed — the conversation is the listening training.
Frequently asked questions
From which level is a tutor worth it?
The biggest gains are at N2–N1 (reading speed, listening, weak-point diagnosis). For N5–N4, self-study plus one weekly check-in lesson is often enough.
My listening is weak — what helps?
The lesson itself is live listening practice. Many tutors add dictation and shadowing homework — ask for a listening-focused plan in your first lesson.
